Kathmandu: Nepali Congress (NC) President Sher Bahadur Deuba has assured that the Constitution will be amended through a broad consensus of all political parties.
Addressing the first meeting of the fifth session of the House of Representatives (HoR) today, Deuba emphasized that constitutional amendments would be pursued with priority while reviewing both its positive and negative aspects. However, he asserted that core principles such as federal democratic republican governance, multi-party competition, and inclusion should remain intact.
He also expressed hope that the bills under consideration in Parliament would be endorsed during this winter session, also known as the legislative session. Reflecting on the six-and-a-half months of the current government, Deuba highlighted the importance of implementing the seven-point agreement between the NC and CPN (UML), which formed the coalition government.
According to Deuba, the government is focused on strengthening democracy, ensuring lasting peace, combating corruption, and fostering economic growth and development. He stressed that improving Nepal’s economic atmosphere was an urgent priority.
The former Prime Minister noted that several ordinances had been introduced recently to promote business, investment, and good governance, expressing confidence that they would be passed by Parliament. "The rule of law is the foundation of democracy, and Parliament is the venue for enacting laws. We must not delay in lawmaking," he stated.
Defining democracy as the best political system, Deuba reaffirmed his belief that democracy itself is the only alternative to democracy, adding that it is capable of making Nepal a prosperous nation.
Meanwhile, CPN (UML) lawmaker Yogesh Kumar Bhattarai supported the recent ordinances, stating that they would expand investment opportunities and address issues faced by landless citizens. He reiterated that constitutional amendments should strengthen democracy and enhance fundamental rights while expressing confidence that this session of Parliament would effectively fulfill its legislative responsibilities.
